Covid-19 Information

Covid Testing

The rapid testing programme is being used to help detect and fight COVID-19. It uses lateral flow tests and the programme is only for people showing no symptoms. The tests are free. Tameside Council’s Public Health team are recommending everyone in Tameside who does not have any symptoms to get tested twice weekly. Both lateral flow and PCR test kits can be ordered on line or by phone for posting to people’s home address, to be completed and returned by post.

Even if you have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 90 days, it is still useful to take regular lateral flow tests to check if you have active infection.

Tests can be accessed via any of the means below: · Order a home testing kit online here: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

· Collect a home test kit at a local pharmacy, find your nearest participating pharmacy here: https://maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk/

· Collect a home test kit at any of Tameside’s 8 local libraries, find opening times here: www.tameside.gov.uk/libraries/Covid19#OpenLibs

There are different types of lateral flow test kits being used with some only using nasal swabs, so it’s a good idea to check the instructions carefully before taking the test. The guidance has recently changed meaning if you now have a positive lateral flow test, you no longer need to go for a confirmatory PCR test, you just upload the lateral flow test result and then take the appropriate action to isolate and NHS Test and Trace will contact you.

Lateral flow tests can also be used to see if you are able to end your isolation period early if you have tested positive. On day 6 and 7 of your isolation period you can do lateral flow tests and if both are negative, you can end your isolation period early on day 7. If they are positive, you should continue isolating but can test again the next day to see if you can still release slightly early.

Lateral flow tests are also important if you are identified as a close contact of someone who tests positive for Covid-19. If you are fully vaccinated and a close contact, as a frontline healthcare worker you will need to get a negative PCR test before coming back in to work and then you should do daily lateral flow tests for 10 days. If you are a close contact and are not double vaccinated, you will need to isolate for 10 days. Further information can be found here Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 should book a test online: www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119. Those with symptoms can book in at local testing sites at Darnton Road in Ashton and Beeley Street in Hyde, also there is currently a Mobile Testing Unit at Curzon Ashton during weekdays; further information can be found here Coronavirus Testing (tameside.gov.uk)
